The Port Authority of Bilbao is promoting its sustainability and decarbonisation strategy with a project to connect ships to the onshore power supply (OPS) network at its main docks.
The project, carried out by the joint venture formed by COMSA Industrial, Sampol and Montajes Eléctricos San Ignacio (MESI), includes the design, implementation and maintenance of a new electrical infrastructure that will supply energy to ferries, container ships and cruise ships during their stay in port, thus reducing the emissions associated with on-board generators.
The project involves the installation of nine OPS systems at docks A1, A2, A6, AZ3 and Getxo 2 and 3, designed to supply the port’s main traffic with low-emission energy. From a technical point of view, it includes the development of a 30 kV distribution network, specific substations depending on the type of vessel, control and monitoring systems, as well as an underwater cable that will cross the Bilbao estuary to guarantee the electricity supply on both banks.
With a budget of close to €50 million, this project is one of the most significant port electrification initiatives in Spain. Its implementation will contribute to improving air quality and reducing noise pollution in the port and urban environment.
The project is part of the European objectives for decarbonisation of maritime transport and energy transition, aligning with the European Green Deal, the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan and the Regulation on Alternative Fuels Infrastructure.
This action is funded by the CEF Transport programme, managed by the European Commission through CINEA, and co-financed by the European Investment Bank.
