Reopening of the Beira Alta Line in Portugal

This weekend, Infraestruturas de Portugal reopened the railway section between Pampilhosa and Mangualde on the Beira Alta Line, restoring full train service on the connection to Coimbra and the Northern Line, as well as along the entire renovated section of the line, from Pampilhosa to the Spanish border at Vilar Formoso.

COMSA and its Portuguese subsidiary Fergrupo have played a leading role in this modernisation by executing the Pampilhosa – Santa Comba Dão subsection. The work has included the complete renovation of 34 kilometres of track, the reinforcement of tunnels and bridges, the remodelling of Mortágua station and several halts, as well as the construction of grade separations and improvements in accessibility, signalling and telecommunications.

Both companies have also built the Concordância da Mealhada, a new strategic connection between the Northern Line and the Beira Alta Line that strengthens rail mobility in Portugal, increasing the capacity and efficiency of the network.

This reopening marks the completion of a project of great importance for the Portuguese rail system, which contributes to improving freight and passenger transport, strengthening interconnection with Spain and promoting more sustainable mobility.
