COMSA Rail Transport begins to transport cars between SEAT and the Port of Barcelona
18-01-2008COMSA Rail Transport today began to transport cars between the SEAT factory and the Port of Barcelona through Autometro, a company in which Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) and Pecovasa also have a stake.
The first train transporting vehicles from SEAT arrived this afternoon in the Port of Barcelona. In attendance were the Catalan Minister of Town and Country Planning and Public Works, Joaquim Nadal, the chairman of the Port Authority of Barcelona, Jordi Valls and the chairman of the FGC, Joan Torres. Those present on behalf of GRUPO COMSA included Chairman Jorge Miarnau, Deputy Chairman José Miarnau, Transport and International Railway Business Director Miquel Llevat, Transport, Logistics and Equipment Division Director Ignacio Barrenechea and COMSA Rail Transport Director Pau Filella.
€6.8 million has been invested in this service which is set to ship 80,000 vehicles per year thus taking some 25,000 truck journeys off the road. The train, 411 metres long and consisting of 38 articulated double-decker wagons which can carry 171 vehicles between them, is to make two trips per day.
The start-up of this service will help to optimise freight rail transport, which is much more cost-effective and efficient, and also to reduce the emission of pollutant gases into the atmosphere.
