The Ministry of Public Works initiates service of a section of the A-2 in Girona executed by COMSA
19-12-200719 December 2007.The Ministry of Public Works has brought the Caldes de Malavella/Girona Airport/Costa Brava section of the A-2 dual carriageway into service. Built by COMSA, this stretch of road has cost €20.36 million and was opened by Magdalena álvarez, the Minister of Public Works.
The work has involved widening the old N-II road between kilometre points 701.3 and 705.2 with the addition of two new carriageways running parallel to the route of the existing N-II road. The total length of the section is 3,940 metres.
COMSA has built two new carriageways that are separate from the old N-II, each consisting of two 3.5-metre wide lanes with a 2.5 m outside hard shoulder and a 1.5 m inside one. The carriageways are separated by twin concrete barriers in the central reservation. The old N-II will be upgraded into a two-way service road giving access to local roads and adjoining properties.
Six viaducts have been built as part of the project: one over the River Onyar with a 51-metre span, another over the Riudevilla gully with 26.8-metre span, and four on the Girona Airport link road, each with a 21-metre span. A flyover has also been built over the dual carriageway to connect the local Franciac road with the old N-II, and drainage channels and wildlife corridors have been built all along the new section of the A-2 dual carriageway and the old N-II.
