GRUPO COMSA was founded in 1891 in Reus, Tarragona, when railway company employee José Miarnau Navás decided to go it alone and set up a small company to carry out railway infrastructure projects.
During its first few years the company focussed on track work and station renovation and soon won recognition from the leading rail companies of the time.
In the 1930s the company moved its head office from Reus to Barcelona and became a public limited company in February 1934 under the name Hijos de José Miarnau Navás.
In the 1940s the company diversified its business activities into other areas of civil engineering and began building bridges, roads, buildings, etc.
In 1964 the company changed its name to Construcciones Miarnau, S.A., coinciding with a generational handover and the start of the mechanisation of track work.
In the 1980s the company consolidated its presence throughout Spain with projects in Asturias, Andalusia, Galicia and Castile. It also continued to diversify its activities, setting up its Real Estate and Aggregate businesses.
In the 1990s COMSA carried out major technical reworking together with revamped personnel training, investment in new equipment and research and development into new construction systems. It also started up its internationalisation process and set up Fergrupo, the Group’s subsidiary in Portugal.
With the new century the Group has expanded its overseas presence and now operates in more than ten countries on four continents (Europe, South America, Asia and Oceania), while at the same time it has ramped up its diversification and has more than 40 companies working in a variety of fields. This new reality means a thorough-going restructuring of the Group, which is organised into divisions by product and service in order to meet market needs and deliver specific solutions to each sub-sector in its spheres of business activity: railways, construction (buildings and civil works), engineering, the environment, real estate, concessions and agriculture amongst others.
